Most couples are nervous before their first session. That's normal. You're about to talk about something that's been hard to talk about, in front of someone you've just met.
Here's what actually happens in that first hour, so you know what you're walking into.
Before you arrive
You'll fill out a brief intake form that covers the basics: how long you've been together, what brought you in, what you're hoping to get from therapy. This gives your therapist a starting picture so you don't spend the first session just doing paperwork.
The first few minutes
Your therapist will introduce themselves, explain how sessions work, and cover confidentiality. This part goes quickly. Most couples are ready to get into it faster than they expect.
What the session actually covers
The first session is mostly about understanding where you are as a couple. Not dissecting every problem, just getting a clear picture of what's going on and how long it's been going on.
Your therapist will ask both of you to talk. Not just the person who made the appointment. Both of you.
Some couples come in expecting the therapist to be a referee who will hear both sides and declare someone right. That's not how it works. A good therapist isn't there to take sides. They're there to help you both understand what's actually happening between you.
What you won't have to do
You won't have to have the big fight in session. You won't have to share everything in the first hour. You won't be pushed to say things you're not ready to say.
The first session is about starting, not finishing. You're giving it a real chance to see if this is something worth continuing.
How people usually feel afterward
Most couples feel some combination of relieved and slightly wrung out. Relieved because they finally said some things that have been sitting there unspoken. Slightly tired because it takes real energy to be honest.
A lot of people say it felt different from what they expected. Better, usually.
